Settle in. If you smoke, light one up — let’s talk about your brain
Smoking is one of the most “ordinary” and aggressive of the 14 modifiable risk factors for developing dementia.
In general, it is believed that 14% of Alzheimer’s disease cases may potentially be linked to smoking.
There is probably no point talking about the risk of cancer, strokes, heart and lung disease, hypertension, or atherosclerosis — smokers tend to have iron resistance to those arguments.
Maybe explaining the mechanism of how a smoker methodically and deliberately destroys their own mind will create more discomfort than the “fun” pictures on cigarette packs.
Yes, nicotine really does help you focus, feel in control, relax, and calm down.
A distant past experience — I know this from myself.
And I also know that this effect is a trap.
When you inhale nicotine, it begins to play with the brain by activating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Nicotine pushes the release of dopamine and acetylcholine.
Dopamine, as we know, is the chemistry of pleasure. And acetylcholine helps with concentration, learning, attention, and temporarily gives the feeling of “mental sharpness.”
And so, after a few puffs, you feel collected, even a little pleased with life.
Especially after a cigarette after a meal, right?
And you can also quickly calm down and “pull yourself together” after another cortisol spike.
So Maybe Nicotine Turns Out to Be a “Medicine for the Mind”?
There are studies confirming that nicotine itself improves attention and memory.
It has also been found that in people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, a low-dose nicotine patch reduces impulsivity and improves memory.
Here is what Paul Newhouse, Director of the Center for Cognitive Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, said in Neurology Today in 2012 on the question of whether it is worth testing low doses of nicotine in the form of patches or chewing gum:
“The published data certainly indicate a potential positive effect [for the correction of mild cognitive impairment], and this looks like a reasonable strategy for further trials.”
So maybe nicotine turns out to be a “medicine for the mind” if you do not consume it together with burning tar?
But I have one question: why?
As a strategy to quit smoking — yes.
But in terms of stimulation, there are ways to support concentration, mental clarity, and emotional balance without nicotine at all:
- physical activity
- cognitive load
- sleep
- low-carbohydrate nutrition
These are things that work not for a moment, but for the long run.
Even the same omega-3s and antioxidants improve attention and memory — without toxins and addiction.
So the Question Here Is Not Whether Nicotine Works.
It works.
But do you understand what a bad deal this is?
There are paths that do not take anything away from you. They only give.
Every smoker knows perfectly well: the effect of nicotine burns out quickly.
After some time, they need more to achieve the same effect.
And so the circle repeats.
In the end, their receptors begin to “get lazy.”
Without a dose, they no longer work as actively.
You want to think clearly — you smoke more.
You want to calm down — you light up again.
What happens next?
With every puff, thousands of free radicals appear in the body, and over time antioxidants cope with them less and less.
At the same time, smokers have a seriously reduced level of these brain-protecting antioxidants, especially glutathione and vitamin E.
So brain cells are attacked more and more freely by free radicals and inflammation.
Soon, any small inflammation — for example, from the lungs — can spread almost unhindered into the brain and start destroying neurons.
Yes, Everyone Knows That Smoking Destroys Blood Vessels.
And damages the cardiovascular system.
Boring.
That argument alone stopped working on smokers a long time ago.
So how about this? A person who smokes has 30–40% less oxygen in their blood.
A smoker dramatically worsens the blood supply to their brain, depriving it of essential nutrients and oxygen.
Blood oxygen saturation is simply at rock bottom.
And usually, a smoker’s blood is in a very sad state — thick and viscous, like jelly.
When a doctor looks at a smoker’s blood test results, they usually see that hemoglobin is somewhere through the roof.
This is how the first neurodegenerative changes begin from far away — quietly, invisibly, and gradually.
For Those “Under the Spell” of Excuses
For those “under the spell” of excuses like:
“I’ve been smoking for too long, it’s too late to quit” — there is very good news.
Use it right now.
Studies show that when people, even with a long smoking history, stop poisoning their brain, the risk of dementia really does drop very significantly.
So it makes sense to stop right here and now.
How? There are many methods.
